The National Women’s History Alliance (NWHA) spearheaded the movement for March being declared National Women’s History Month. This observance highlights the contributions of women to events in history, to the development of our contemporary society, and to the future they will help define. NWHA feels that this is a pivotal moment in history in which we are called to confront a range of global challenges including climate change, economic insecurity, healthcare disparities, and threats to democratic participation. Although women, particularly from marginalized communities, often experience the impacts of these issues most acutely, they also have led the charge towards lasting solutions. The theme for 2026 “expands our understanding of sustainability beyond just environmental concerns. It encompasses financial sustainability, community resilience, leadership succession, and intergenerational equity. Whether developing green technologies, advancing economic justice, strengthening education systems, or building civic power – women are designing blueprints for sustainable transformation. This theme affirms that shaping a sustainable future means fostering systems that support both people and the planet.”
