Curriculum and Assessments
We live in a competitive global economy. To prepare our students to meet these demands, we base our instruction on standards for each academic curricular area. We are currently transitioning from the California State Standards in English language arts and mathematics to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). We continue to teach the California Standards in social studies and science.
California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP)
The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) measures student progress in different subjects. It helps teachers monitor the needs and successes of individual students as they progress toward mastery of the state adopted standards. We participate in the regular following testing of SUSD students:
- Arts/Literacy and Mathematics
- California Alternate Assessments (CAAs)
- California Science Test (CAST)
- Primary Language Assessment – Standards-based tests in Spanish for reading and language arts
- Physical Fitness Testing (PFT)
- English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC)
PE Testing for Fifth Grade
The State Board of Education (SBE) designated the FITNESSGRAM® as the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) for students in California public schools. The FITNESSGRAM® is a comprehensive, health-related physical fitness battery developed by The Cooper Institute in Dallas, Texas. The primary goal of the FITNESSGRAM® is to assist students in establishing lifetime habits of regular physical activity.
The PFT provides information helpful for:
- students to assess and plan personal fitness programs;
- teachers to design the curriculum for physical education programs; and
- parents and guardians to understand their children’s fitness levels;
This program also provides data used to monitor changes in the physical fitness of California students. By law (Education Code Section 60800), all school districts in California must administer the PFT annually to all students in the fifth, seventh, and ninth grades.
For more information, please see the California Department of Education FAQ page.
