Patriot Day is observed every year on September 11 to honor the lives lost in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. This includes those who died at the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Virginia, and in the crash of the hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 in Pennsylvania, as well as the first responders and others who died while attempting to rescue those trapped by the attacks.
This date also honors the lives lost by those who suffered illnesses since the attacks from being part of the first responder teams, search and rescue teams, and disaster clean-up teams as a result of the catastrophic devastation caused when four individual aircraft were used as weapons of mass destruction. It is a day in which all people of the United States are invited to participate in community service in honor of those lives lost. The Saugus Union School District recognizes and honors this date by participating in a variety of ceremonies, activities, and lessons that bring together our staff, students, and community.
