On Monday, January 19, 2026, all Saugus Union School District sites will be closed in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King was an American civil rights activist and Baptist minister who was a prominent leader of the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. He promoted nonviolent protest, advocated for racial equality, and delivered his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech during the 1963 March on Washington. Dr. King believed that “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” Everyone is encouraged to perform acts of public service as a way to commemorate his legacy. Classes will resume on Tuesday, January 20.
