Celebrating National Native American Heritage Month: Sharice Davids

Sharice Davids is a member of the Ho-Chunk people. She was raised by her single mother, Crystal Herriage, who served in the United States Army for 20 years. After graduating from Leavenworth High School, Davids worked her way through Johnson County Community College and the University of Missouri-Kansas City before earning a law degree from Cornell Law School. When she was sworn into the 116th Congress as the representative for Kansas’s 3rd congressional district, she became one of the first two Native American women to serve in Congress, not to mention the first openly LGBTQ+ Native American to fill the role. She has a strong focus on economic and community development. She has worked to limit the influence of special interests and to make health care more affordable and accessible to everyone.
