Congratulations Dr. Joan Lucid

It is fitting that the first announcement on our new website is an introduction of Dr. Joan Lucid, the new superintendent of the Saugus Union School District!  Dr. Lucid has been with the district for 30 years and most recently held the position of assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction.  I have worked closely with Joan over the past eleven years, and am excited that she will move into the superintendent position fully knowledgeable of our district and prepared to take us to new heights.

Joan needs no introduction to the Santa Clarita Valley.  She not only has lived here since 1998, but also serves on many service organizations including the Santa Clarita Valley Education Foundation and the Santa Clarita Valley K-12 Arts Professional Development Consortium.  She has been recognized on numerous occasions by both community and professional organizations.  Joan received her Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership with La Verne University in 1998.  She has been married to Bill, who is also an educator, for 42 years and has two sons, William and Donald and a granddaughter, Madison.

Please join the board and me in congratulating Dr. Lucid on her new appointment!  I am confident that you will be as delighted to work with Joan as I have been for the past eleven years.

Mr. Bob Cutting is also retiring after serving the district for the past decade as assistant superintendent of business services.  His financial expertise, especially through the economically challenging years, has enabled the district to stay focused on students and programs.  His innovative manner of securing financing for facilities has set a new standard of excellence that will impact the design of schools for years to come.  To Bob I extend a heartfelt thank you.  I have enjoyed working with you and wish you all the best in your retirement.

I would also like to welcome Mrs. Cynthia Shieh as the new assistant superintendent of business.  Mrs. Shieh has an extensive background in school finance and comes to us from Mount Pleasant School District in San Jose where she held the position of assistant superintendent of business services.  Her husband works in the health care industry and their two daughters attend the University of Southern California.

As I continue along my journey in retirement, I will always hold the Saugus Union School District community close to my heart.  Thank you for all your support over the years.  My best wishes to every member of the Saugus Family!
