Saugus Union School District offers parents the opportunity to educate their children in their home environment through the Independent Home Study Program, an alternative public school option for parents of children in Kindergarten through sixth grade.
Parents who would like to choose this option for their children's education must meet the enrollment criteria. The determination is based on an individial interview.
Parents are provided the textbooks, workbooks, supplementary materials and teacher guides for each subject as required by the California Department of Education. Curriculum for language arts (reading, spelling, writing, grammar, and oral language skills); math, social studies (history, geography, government, science); physical education, music and art is provided to the parents at no cost. Parents sign a contract outlining responsibilities of school and home, and are expected to provide a quality learning environment.
Extracurricular activities are an important part of your child’s education. Fine arts is required. The IHS teacher will provide curriculum and resources for music and art. Field trips are encouraged as they address the curricular material. As educational enrichment activities, events or field trips are suggested by IHS families, the IHS teacher will coordinate arrangements to meet together. Back to School Night, Cultural and Holiday celebrations and a Science and Art Fair are held annually for IHS students and their families.
Securing The Future
If your children are enrolled in the IHS program, you can be assured that their educational needs will be met at their assigned grade level. Weekly appointments must be kept with the IHS teacher to monitor ongoing progress. Monthly assessments are given for oral reading, language arts and math progress to assure that your child will achieve the completion of all grade level work by the end of the school year.
