District Program Improvement

November 10, 2011

Dear Parents and Guardians of Students in the Saugus Union School District:

The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 mandates that California have high academic

standards in Language Arts and Mathematics for every grade level, and that every 2nd

through 6th grade student be tested against those standards each year through STAR testing.

Districts that receive Federal Title I money must ensure that every demographic subgroup keeps

pace with the NCLB student performance targets called Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) goals.  If any

demographic subgroup of students does not make AYP goals for two consecutive years, the District

is identified as being in Program Improvement.Students in the Saugus Union School District

continue to make progress, however, the rate of progress towards AYP goals for some of our

demographic subgroups has not been fast enough to meet AYP goals. This letter is to inform

you that our District is in Year I of Program Improvement. The specific achievement data the State

used to make this decision can be found at http://ayp.cde.ca.gov/reports/Acnt2011

2011APRDstAYPReport.aspx?cYear=&allCds=1964998&cChoice=AYP10b(and on the

District web site- www.saugus.k12.ca.us) If you do not have access to the Internet, please contact

Renée Trock, 661.294.5300 at the Saugus Union School District, and a hard copy will be sent to

you.As a Program Improvement District, Saugus Union must:

Write an addendum to our District Plan in consultation with parents and school staff.  It includes

information  about how we plan to use Title I funds to improve student achievement, and will be

posted on our District web site.

Use at least 10% of our annual Title I funds to provide professional development for teachers and

administrators.

Here are some suggestions to help parents work with our District to support improvements:

Visit your child’s school. Participate in volunteer activities at your school.  Talk with staff about the

District Plan and program changes that must be made to help students meet standards in English

Language Arts and Mathematics.

Get acquainted with the resources available for improving student achievement on the following

websites:
